Leading the Misled to Truth

John MacArthur on Mormonism                                                            Back to Articles

In Mormon BYU professor Robert Millet’s words, he and ministry partner Greg Johnson had a “stimulating experience with John, discussing doctrinal matters for some two hours” He goes on to write that “John was absolutely stunned that two LDS religious professors would visit him, but even more perplexed that [they] had read his books and enjoyed them!” (Millet and Johnson, 2007).

Millet tells of how he informed the Pastor Macarthur that he had quoted him in several of his own books and how they went on to share their feelings about self-proclaimed Christians whose worldliness betrays their lack of true conversion to the Savior. Millet continues;

Early in our conversation he [John] said something like, “Look, anyone knows there are big differences between us. But I don’t want to begin with those differences. Let’s talk about Christ”… We then discussed…a number of fascinating topics. We compared and contrasted, we asked questions, we answered questions… [T]he one thing that made the biggest difference was the mood tat existed there—a mood of openness, candor, and general lack of defensiveness…This experience says something to me about what can happen when people of good will come together in an attitude of openness and in a sincere effort to better understand and be understood. (Ibid, p 10)

Millet has used a variety of venues to name-drop, making it sound like he and Pastor MacArthur joined hands and sang Kumbaya together. However, MacArthur gives a different view of their meeting;

When I met with Robert Millet I expressed my conviction as clearly as possible that the God of the Bible is a completely different God from the god of Mormonism, that the Christ of Scripture is a wholly different Christ from the christ of Mormonism, and the true gospel is a radically different gospel from the gospel of Mormonism.

I have maintained a cordial relationship with Dr. Millet for the sake of the truth, and am happy to provide him with as much of my material as he wishes to read. But my concern is for the truth; I'm not interested in artificial harmony between two contradictory faiths. For that reason I have consistently made clear in all my dialogue with Dr. Millet that there is no spiritual common ground between biblical Christianity and Mormonism.

I would never deliberately equivocate on the truth or do anything that might lend credence to Mormonism. I'm convinced (as are all who understand Scripture accurately) that Mormonism is a false religion, generated by Satan. It is a damnable heresy, and in the words of Paul, "a different gospel," under God's anathema.

"For I am not ashamed of the Good News, since it is God's powerful means of bringing salvation to everyone who keeps on trusting, to the Jew especially, but equally to the Gentile."
